Upper vs Lower Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon is two slot canyons a few miles apart, and they feel very different. Here is which one the Las Vegas tours use, and when it is worth booking the other.

Both canyons sit on Navajo Nation land outside Page, Arizona, and both are visited only with a Navajo guide. The difference is the shape: Upper is wide at the bottom and narrow at the top, Lower is the reverse.

That changes everything from the light to the fitness you need.

The quick answer

The Las Vegas two-day tours visit Lower Antelope Canyon: narrower, longer, with steel stairs and ladders, and usually less crowded. Upper Antelope is a flat walk famous for summer light beams, and you book it separately from Page. Either way you need a Navajo guide, and tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed.

What is the difference between Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon?

Upper is an A-shaped slot you walk into at ground level; Lower is a V-shaped crack you climb down into on stairs and walk out of at the other end.

Which canyon do the Las Vegas tours visit?

Lower Antelope Canyon, on the MaxTour two- and three-day tours and the budget day tour; the one-day sunrise tour uses Lower Antelope or Antelope Canyon X.

The visit lasts about an hour with a Navajo guide, and the fee is included in the tour price. You do not choose the time slot; the operator books it.

Which one is more beautiful?

Both: Upper is about light beams and calm, Lower about colour, curves and a sense of adventure.

Many photographers prefer Lower for its variety of shapes and glowing walls, and say it often feels less crowded. Upper's beams only appear around midday in the brighter months.

Is Lower Antelope Canyon hard?

Not hard, but you climb steep steel stairs in and out, and squeeze through a few narrow spots.

It is not suitable for wheelchairs, and tours advise against it with back or heart problems. Wear closed shoes with grip; the sand is soft and the stairs are metal.

Can you visit Antelope Canyon without a guide?

No. Every visit is a guided tour run under the Navajo Nation, and the permit fee is included in the ticket.

That is why you cannot just stop on the way past. The tours from Las Vegas have pre-booked slots; self-drivers must reserve a time.

How do I add Upper Antelope Canyon?

If you are staying in Page, book an Upper Antelope tour there; the most reviewed one takes about an hour and twenty minutes with all fees included.

It does not fit inside a Las Vegas two-day tour schedule. It suits self-drivers or anyone spending an extra night in Page.
