What to wear and bring

A two-day canyon tour can take you from a freezing dawn on the rim to a hot afternoon at Horseshoe Bend. Here is how to dress for both, and what Antelope Canyon will not let you carry.

Hiking shoes, a fleece, a sun hat, a water bottle and a clear pouch laid out on red sand

The Grand Canyon South Rim sits around 7,000 feet, Page around 4,300, and Las Vegas around 2,000. Temperatures follow.

One guest left Las Vegas at 50 degrees and found snow at the Grand Canyon; another warned that October mornings on the rim felt below freezing.

The quick answer

Dress in layers: a T-shirt, a fleece and a light windproof jacket. Wear closed shoes with grip. Bring sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, a refillable bottle and a power bank. In Antelope Canyon, tripods, monopods and selfie sticks are banned and most operators restrict bags.

What should I wear for the Grand Canyon?

Layers: the rim is cold in the morning for much of the year and warms quickly in the sun.

A long-sleeve base, a fleece and a windproof shell work from autumn to spring; in winter add a warm hat and gloves. In summer, a light layer for the morning and sun protection for midday.

What should I wear for Antelope Canyon?

Comfortable clothes you can climb stairs in, and closed shoes with grip for the soft sand and steel steps.

The slot is shaded and cooler than the surface. Avoid long dangling scarves or straps; the passages are narrow. Fine sand gets everywhere, so skip your best suede shoes.

Lower Antelope Canyon is on day one of the two-day tour.

What is not allowed in Antelope Canyon?

Tripods, monopods and selfie sticks are banned in every section, and most operators do not allow backpacks or large bags.

Carry your phone or camera in hand and a small clear pouch or pocket for essentials. Leave the rest in the van.

What shoes are best?

Trainers or light hiking shoes with a good grip: not sandals or flip-flops.

You walk on sand at Horseshoe Bend and in Antelope Canyon, climb metal stairs in Lower Antelope, and stand on uneven rock at the rim viewpoints.

What should I pack for the overnight?

One small bag: a change of clothes, toiletries, a phone charger and any medication.

The minivan has limited space and the hotel is one night only, so leave your big case at your Las Vegas hotel. Two breakfasts are included; lunch and dinner are not, so bring a card and a little cash. See what the tour includes.

How much water should I bring?

A refillable bottle of at least a litre; the tours hand out bottled water, but Horseshoe Bend is exposed and hot.

The walk to the overlook is about 1.5 miles round trip with no shade. Add sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

Do I need cash?

A little: for tips, small purchases and as a back-up for meals, while the $100 non-resident park fee is usually paid on the day.

Check how your tour collects that fee in the park fee guide.

Fees, meals and pickup times all sorted: check dates for the two-day tour.

What about a sunrise start?

If your tour reaches the rim at dawn, dress for the coldest hour of the day: a hat, gloves and a warm jacket.

Pre-dawn temperatures on the rim can be far below Las Vegas. Read which tours see the sunrise.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear sandals in Antelope Canyon?

It is not a good idea: the sand is deep in places and Lower Antelope has steep metal stairs. Closed shoes are safer.

Can I bring a backpack into Antelope Canyon?

Most operators do not allow backpacks or large bags; keep a phone and essentials in a pocket or small clear pouch.

Is it cold at the Grand Canyon in summer?

Mornings can be cool even in summer, but afternoons are warm. In spring, autumn and winter, expect real cold early on.
